Coach Urban Meyer says Reggie Lewis has a shot at starting at cornerback, but he'll need to improve. He's new to the position, having moved from the other side of the ball at wide receiver.
LB Charles is out
Linebacker Taurean Charles, the guy who got arrested for allegedly throwing a keg at a guy, has been kicked off the Gators for good. Charles says he's going to try to transfer to another school where he can play immediately, even if he has to go to division I-AA to do it.
Leak is changing up his style
Quarterbacks coach Dan Mullen is trying to get QB Chris Leak into top form. From the Alligator:
“Chris is a very accurate passer and he throws very controlled touch passes,” Mullen said. “That’s great, but we want to see some balls come out of him like a rocket, like a 90-mile-an-hour fastball. That’s the first thing we’ve been working on, but it’s hard with a guy that’s all touch. He’s just gotta let it rip sometimes.”
Denny's Waffles update
Danny Wuerffel was inducted into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame. These days, Wuerffel is working at a youth ministry in New Orleans. From the Gainesville Sun:
Wuerffel found out the news Tuesday afternoon at Desire Street Ministries, an inner-city New Orleans faith-based mission where he serves as director of development. Wuerffel, a former New Orleans Saints quarterback, took the job after retiring from the NFL in 2004...
...Wuerffel is still dabbling in football a bit. The Ministry's Academy will enroll seventh- to 12th-graders next fall, and the school will field a varsity football team for the first time next season. Wuerffel is helping the assistant coaches this spring and is helping in the planning of the new varsity football field.
Roberson's decision
It may be a while before we find out if Gator point guard Anthony Roberson will try to go pro. That doesn't seem to bother coach Billy Donovan. From the Florida Times Union:
"That process takes some time," Donovan said. "It could take three weeks. It could take three months." The early entry deadline for underclassmen and high school players is May 14. Players can withdraw their name by June 21, and would maintain eligibility provided they do not hire an agent. The draft is June 28.
Backup QB may play WR
Backup quarterback Gavin Dickey may help out at Wide Receiver. From the Alligator:
And coach has been a little more fan-friendly than old Zook. Same article:
"...it doesn’t do much good standing on the sideline,” coach Urban Meyer said. “...the one thing we’ve been known for is that the best players touch the ball. If he’s one of our best players, that could happen.”
And coach has been a little more fan-friendly than old Zook. Same article:
Meyer lets fans sit, whereas Zook made everyone stand. Also, Zook often practiced on the second field, farther from fans.
Play through the pain. It's easier.
Urban Meyer isn't about to let the injured players just sit and watch. They've got to walk the bleacher steps carrying chains, rocks, sandbags, etc. From the Orlando Sentinel reporting on UF spring practice:
This didn't look like a football practice. It looked like a prison yard...
..."That's the pit," Meyer said. "Stay out of the pit. It's an ugly deal. Nothing good comes out of the pit. That's for injured guys. Their goal is to get out of the pit and practice. Practice is easier than the pit."
Gotta have a winning attitude
Urban Meyer says his guys must have a winning attitude, or they're gone. From CBSSportsLine.com:
"There's a few guys still I question whether they want to win a championship," Meyer said. "Those kind of guys won't be here long."
One reason Roberson might head to the NBA
Apparently the NBA is considering a rule that would restrict teams from drafting players players younger than a certain age. That could make Roberson a hotter prospect. Still, I say he should stay for his senior season. The Gators could use some perimeter help.
No more fullbacks for Florida
Forida's new offense under Urban Meyer eliminates the need for fullbacks. So, the former fullbacks are now linebackers.
Not so fast, Mr. Jackson
Last week, Gator wide receiver Chad Jackson predicted a perfect season, but his coach says they've got a long way to go.
Florida player arrested in brawl describes the fight
Taurean Charles was arrested last summer after a brawl in Gainesville. Since then he's been trying to clear his name so he can hit the field. Scout.com spoke to him. Click the quote for the full article.
This guy throws ice and hits me between the eyes and then he's telling me "I don't care how big you are, I can kick your ass!" And I said F#%k it, don't mess with me and even though he's 150 pounds or so and I'm probably 100 pounds heavier, he comes at me swinging. Yeah, I swung back and I got into the fight and that's how it started. These guys had their beer muscles bulging, a lot of liquid courage.
Added depth at QB
Florida has some solid backup to quarterback Chris Leak. Gators Offensive Coordinator Dan Mullen is breathing a sigh of relief.
Readers rant in defense of Walsh's tears
The Independent Florida Alligator ran a cartoon making fun of Matt Walsh for crying after the loss to Villanova. Now they're catching a little heat from readers.
Steve Spurrier update
While Urban Meyer gets things started in Gainesville, the Old Ball Coach is back in business in South Carolina. Here are some notes from the Gamecocks' first spring practice with Spurrier.
Anthony Roberson going pro?
Anthony Roberson is apparently considering skipping his senior year for a chance to play with the big boys. I don't know if that's such a great idea. One more year would give Roberson a chance to end his college career on a high note, instead of a shooting slump. Then again, he led the SEC in scoring and helped Florida win their first ever conference championship. It just seems like he might get a better chance at a decent draft pick with another year under his belt.
Disappointing season?
Disappointing Season? Billy Donovan doesn't think so. Here's a quote from the Orlando Sentinel:
New coach - new philosophy
Urban Meyer held his first spring practice at Florida. Scout.com has exclusive pictures.
